From August 1, 2025, new rules for UPI (Unified Payments Interface) have started. These rules apply to all users of apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, and others. The goal is to make UPI payments safer, reduce system load, and improve user experience.
1. Balance Check Limit: Only 50 Times per Day
If you check your bank balance through UPI apps, you can now do it only 50 times per day per app.
Earlier, users could check as many times as they wanted, which caused system slowdowns. Now, the app will also show your balance after each successful payment, so you don’t need to check it again and again.
2. Limit on Viewing Linked Bank Accounts
Each UPI app shows a list of bank accounts linked to your mobile number. From now, you can check this list only 25 times a day per app.
This step helps reduce extra pressure on the UPI servers and keeps the system fast during peak hours.
3. Autopay Works Only at Fixed Times
UPI now processes automatic payments (autopay) only during three time slots in the day:
- Before 10:00 AM
- Between 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
- After 9:30 PM
So if you have scheduled payments like mobile recharge, electricity bills, SIPs, or EMIs, they will go through during these hours. If one try fails, UPI will retry up to three more times before cancelling the payment.
4. Status Check Limit: Only 3 Times per Transaction
If your payment is stuck, you can now check its status only three times. Also, you must wait at least 90 seconds between each try.
Many users kept tapping refresh again and again, which made the system slow. This rule keeps the platform smooth and reliable for everyone.
5. Recipient Name Will Be Shown Clearly
Before confirming any payment, your UPI app will now clearly show:
- The full name of the person or business you are paying
- A transaction ID for your records
This reduces mistakes and helps prevent fraud or wrong transfers.

6. Strict Rules for Apps and Banks
If any UPI app or bank fails to follow these new rules, they may face action. This includes limits on access, warnings, or even stopping new user sign-ups until they fix the issue.
This makes sure all apps follow the same system and keep things fair for all users.
